Some real issues, William Pitt tells you about how ABC pants your reality with often debunked allegations, produced and pushed by conservatives.

ABC intends to mark the occasion in far more grand a fashion. Starting September 10th and ending September 11th, the network will show a miniseries titled "The Path to 9/11." According to reports from early screenings, the writer/producer of the miniseries, Cyrus Nowrasteh, has crafted a television polemic intended to blame the entire event on President Clinton.
Nowrasteh, an outspoken conservative of Persian descent whose family fled Iran after the fall of the Shah, spoke last year at the Liberty Film Festival, described by its founders as Hollywood's first conservative film festival. Govindini Murty, actress, writer, and co-director of the Liberty Film Festival, wrote a review of "The Path to 9/11" for the right-wing online news page FrontPageMag.com.
In the review, Murty states, "'The Path to 9/11' is one of the best, most intelligent, most pro-American miniseries I've ever seen on TV, and conservatives should support it and promote it as vigorously as possible. This is the first Hollywood production I've seen that honestly depicts how the Clinton administration repeatedly bungled the capture of Osama bin Laden."
FrontPageMag, it should be noted, held a symposium back in May to argue that the Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, which were never found despite being the main reason for invasion, were actually spirited out of Iraq by Russia on the eve of the 2003 attack. So it goes.
Leaving aside the wretched truth that the far right is once again using September 11 to score political points, the facts regarding the still-lingering effort to blame the Clinton administration for the attacks must be brought to the fore. Nowrasteh, at several points in his miniseries, rolls out a number of oft-debunked allegations that Clinton allowed Osama bin Laden to remain alive and free before the attacks.
Roger Cressy, National Security Council senior director for counterterrorism in the period 1999-2001, responded to these allegations in an article for the Washington Times in 2003. "Mr. Clinton approved every request made of him by the CIA and the U.S. military involving using force against bin Laden and al-Qaeda," wrote Cressy. "As President Bush well knows, bin Laden was and remains very good at staying hidden. The current administration faces many of the same challenges. Confusing the American people with misinformation and distortions will not generate the support we need to come together as a nation and defeat our terrorist enemies."

Hermaphroditious

Should it be called that? Knowing Harpers got rung dry on the alternate theories on causes of AIDS article published a while back, but you have to know this is really happening. I have been following the news, journals and all available research on this stuff and it is true. It is not a theory as this may happen, it is really happening, now.
I will post more files I have here at a later time, time, and equipment to do so. But the effects are real. Effects of the species human. Nature, our earth has ways to cleanse it's self, you can smell it, rain refreshes the air. You can see it, rivers wash clean it's shores with flood, dry heavy over growth burns leaving new space for new life. It is a cycle, a life cycle that like weather patterns are the rhythm of earth, the pace of life, it's very heart beat of a living breathing grumpy planet.
Jay Leno makes jokes of the polar bears, and it is almost about as funny as Anne's adams apple. His jokes about smaller gentiles for polar bears, there is more truth to it. Male humans are becoming sterile, and drops in male birth rates in several countries. My point is things are already happening to people from these chemicals that pollute our environments. worn out from a marathon that should had been a sprint ; Read the harpers story, and a Bitch'n festival .... Things I am in the dark about

Something I am not in the dark about, very aware of, extremely anxious about the people lost through the enormous cracks in this social endeavor of the Bush, the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. Aware also of how directly unlawful this government program is, more destructive than constructive where as the intentions are never clear, discrimination gone wild and bound to happen. Having a hand in helping multitudes is honorable, but when at the same time your hand lends to bigotry, discrimination of even one it sorta nullifies the purpose and principals and ethics that were meant to maintain freedoms through human rights, and there is where it limits those rights. Appointing a new chief whom oversees the grand oils party binding contract with the 'religious right' yet neglected and put on a back burner to war and is referred to as neglected, 'poor track record' and 'wrecked'. Leaving possibly the godless, agnostic, or even those not of such faith turn for social services if this were the only option, danger is one day it could be the only option. How for example do the participants determine eligibility, worthy Christian maybe, done your deeds, prayed to the USofA church of faith incentives. I notice some of you reading here have came from religious theme blogs and web sites, who may support government funding of church activities in communities. I say go community wild, just not with tax dollars, you can't no way in heaven or hell be fair and just when you fight over who is approved to issue the help without denying your own religious values.

New Chief Oversees a Less Visible Faith Office

The White House announced Jay F. Hein's appointment at 6:30 p.m. on a Thursday three weeks ago, the kind of timing usually reserved for news the administration wants to bury.

Hein is the new director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, the third person since 2000 who has headed President Bush's effort to help religious groups win public funding to counsel addicts, mentor prisoners' children and provide other social services. Before he took up his duties this week, the position had been vacant for more than two months.

Wonder when some peoples religion becomes criminal, however slim the chances of such a 'cult' to receive funding, possible without over sight and the door has been left open. As this sick to the extreme example, Preparing your body for God would not pass as a fundable interest, how is religious organizations that cover and protect criminals still receiving funding. You have to read the link, to get the jist.

Allot I am in the dark about. You. And when it comes to places people frequent, and I do not (and will not for more reasons than this), like wal-marts, sams. Doggie chews, big bone type synthetic maybe bio-synthetic dono. Labeled not for consumption, or intake, the dog must chew but not swallow it isn't intended or safe or something for consumption of the animal that puts this in mouth. Hum. Dogs should not ingest the preservatives, nitrates in smoked, cured animal by-products because of carcinogens. Chew bones for dummies with dogs, better get em' greenies good for your dog. I do not know or care if wal-mart stocks greenies.

Some things (see below) you may be in the dark about. I have no idea if it is censored from mainstream tv as no time to sit and watch, I sit to read. Daylight is getting shorter and the evenings with warm dry weather have me landscaping and weeding, in short spans in the heat. Good food takes effort, my cornucopia floweth over bursting in bright colors. Red tomatoes, Orange, green, yellow, red peppers of several varieties. Green (fried) tomatoes, veggy stuffed green peppers tomato slice melted cheese top and steamed green beans with sesame and flax seed flame melted butter top of onions. worth the work

Mexico's "enormous civil protest"

Violent Civil Unrest Tightens Hold on a Mexican City
By JAMES C. McKINLEY Jr.

OAXACA, Mexico, Aug. 23

[GX: The APPO protests are non-violent. Police and thugs have beaten and killed protestors. The headline implicates the APPO protests inflicting personal injuries.]

For three months, civil unrest has gripped this lovely colonial city like a hound with a rabbit, leaving two people dead, crippling the tourist industry and shuttering schools.

[GX: The logic here is that "civil unrest" has left "two people dead" again implicating the APPO in the deaths. Armed gunmen and police twice fired on non-violent protests killing the two men.]

The original cause of the strife Â? a teachers' strike for better pay Â? has become lost in the escalating violence and the revolutionary demands of the protesters, who now demand that Gov. Ulises Ruiz step down.

[GX: The teachers' demands have not been "lost." Section 22 of the National Union of Education Workers purposefully suspended the demands until the Governor, Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, resigns or is ousted by the Senate.]

The teachers' union has been joined by scores of social organizations, some of them with leftist philosophies.

[GX: There are hundreds of organizations involved in the APPO.]

They have shut down highways, taken over five radio stations, burned more than a dozen buses, blocked off the city's historic square, seized government offices, destroyed the stage for an annual cultural fair and barricaded tourists in their hotels.

[GX: There have been a few protests in front of hotels, but I know of no case where the APPO targeted tourists or barricaded them in hotel.]

The state government has lost control of the center of the city, including its own offices, and is working out of improvised quarters with cellphones. Though each side has asked for federal intervention, President Vicente Fox has refused to send in troops. He has dispatched negotiators from the Interior and Labor Ministries, who have been unsuccessful in resolving the conflict.

[GX: President Fox refused to answer the APPO's call for a direct dialogue with Carlos Abascal, Minister of the Interior.]

On the national level, Mexico has been engulfed in a political crisis since the leftist presidential candidate, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, narrowly lost the July 2 election, according to an official tally. He has accused his conservative rival, Felipe Calderón, of fraud and mounted similar protests in Mexico City, taking over the central square.

[GX: The "official tally" is currently the subject of scrutiny by the Federal Electoral Tribunal after a legal challenge made by Lopez Obrador's coalition party.]

Though the conflict here started well before the election, it has added to the country's overall angst, feeding fears that left-wing groups will use Mr. López Obrador's movement to foment unrest, with heavy-handed counterattacks by people in power.

[GX: I do not know whose "fears" these are. In scores of interviews in Mexico City and Oaxaca, I have not heard any such fears of "left-wing groups [using] Mr. López Obrador's movement to foment unrest".]

Governor Ruiz, of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which long ruled this state with a iron hand, has accused local leaders of Mr. López Obrador's party, the Party of the Democratic Revolution, of taking part in the protests, adding yet another layer of politics to the conflict.

Early on Tuesday, police officers in a convoy that had been sent to clear blocked streets opened fire on a radio station that the protesters had seized. In the gunfire, Lorenzo San Pablo Cervantes, 52, an architect who worked for the state, was killed, the police said. It is unclear whether he was a bystander or was supporting the strikers.

[GX: "In the gunfire" makes it sound like the protesters also had and used guns. This was not the case. The police fired upon unarmed protesters, killing San Pablo Cervantes.]

The protesters seized about a dozen radio stations on Monday afternoon after unidentified gunmen destroyed the broadcasting equipment of Channel 9, a public television and radio station the strikers and their allies commandeered early this month to spread their version of
events, the authorities said.

The state attorney general, Lizbeth Caña, said someone had fired at the officers from roofs near the station, starting the gunfight. But witnesses said the police had opened fire twice without provocation.

"They are the ones who brought arms, and we had nothing but rocks," said Manuel Díaz, 40, a teacher, who was keeping a tense guard on Wednesday with an ax handle outside the radio station where the shooting had occurred. "Ruiz talks out of both sides of his mouth. On
the television he calls on us to negotiate. But in the streets at night, he tries to kill us."

[GX: This quote is, in fact, representative of the sentiments I have found amongst protesters.]

On Aug. 10, Eleuterio José Jiménez Colmenares, 50, an auto mechanic and the husband of a teacher, was shot and killed during a march to support the strike as he chased youths who had thrown rocks at marchers.

Enrique Rueda Pacheco, the leader of the 70,000-member teachers' union, said the deaths, and Mr. Ruiz's use of tear gas and riot police in an attempt to dislodge the protesters from the city center on June 14, had made it impossible for the teachers to accept anything less than his resignation. Their demands for more pay are no longer the primary issue, Mr. Rueda Pacheco said.

"The fundamental problem has been the lack of interest of the state and federal governments," he said in an interview. "They bet the teachers would just go away."

Miguel Ã?ngel Concha, a spokesman for Governor Ruiz, said the state lacks the money to meet the teachers' salary demands. The teachers had asked for a pay package that would have cost $150 million, while the state's final offer in June was about $8.5 million. The teachers also
have asked for about a dozen improvements, including new books and more classrooms, for a state school system that serves hundreds of thousands of students.

Mr. Ruiz's aides acknowledged that the government made an enormous error on June 14 when it used force, angering many teachers who were used to an annual strike and a resulting pay increase. An unconfirmed rumor that a woman and two children had died in the attack because of
tear gas has become gospel among the protesters, though no bodies have been found.

Beyond the salary dispute, however, are old political rivalries. Mr. Ruiz narrowly won election over a leftist candidate in 2004, and many of the teachers and other protesters view his victory as illegitimate. They also accuse his police force of at least 35 political killings of civilians, which the government strongly denies. Finally, Mr. Ruiz vowed to end the yearly teachers' strikes that previous governors had routinely settled by granting raises.

Ms. Caña, the attorney general, charges that groups seeking to overthrow the government have infiltrated the union. "These people are saying 'Hit me, so I can denounce you for hitting me,' " she said. "They are generating instability and chaos."

On Tuesday night, demonstrators gathered in the Zócalo, the central square, to watch a documentary made by protesters on televisions they had set up. The film accuses Mr. Ruiz not only of killing scores of his political enemies, but of being a pawn for global capitalism.

Now, the once jewel-like center of Oaxaca is a mess. Protesters have stolen buses and used pickup trucks to block streets, along with rocks, barbed wire and ropes. Graffiti declaring Mr. Ruiz an assassin defaces most of the buildings. Tents and tarps shelter protesters, who burn tires and garbage at night, keeping an eye out for the police. The city's once-prosperous tourism industry is gasping for air. More than 1,000 hotel workers have been laid off, and tourists have canceled reservations well into 2007. The hotel and motel association estimates that the industry has lost $150 million in the last three months, not to mention the embarrassing cancellation of the
Guelaguetza cultural festival here.

"No one has won anything here," said Fredy Alcántara, the president of the association. "No one has come out ahead." The federal government must intervene, he said, adding, "We are desperate."

American Atheists Press Release

Apology Needed as National Guard General Blasts “Agnostics, Atheists, Bigots” During NAACP Speech

In a shocking “about face,” the Chief of the National Guard Bureau praised American diversity and the role played by minorities in our nation’s military defense, but then suddenly chastised “Agnostics, atheists and bigots.”

Lt. Army Gen. H. Steven Blum made the remarks while speaking to the NAACPs Annual Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Awards Dinner in Washington, DC on July 18. The story, including quotes from Blum’s talk, was reported in an American Forces Press Service dispatch. According to writer Rudi Williams:

“As for the military’s diversity, Blum said, the battlefield might be the greatest equalizer. ‘Agnostics, atheists and bigots suddenly lose all that when their life is on the line,’ Blum said. ‘Something that they lived with their whole life believing gets thrown out the door, and they grasp the comrade next them, and they don’t care what color their skin is, and they don’t care where they pray…’”

American Atheists President Ellen Johnson said that much of Blum’s talk emphasizing themes such as tolerance and diversity was “stained by an animus directed at Agnostics and Atheists.”

“Why is he singling out the millions of Americans who simply have doubts about religion or do not believe in religious teachings, and then comparing this group to ‘bigots’?”

Johnson said that if religious groups and ethnic minorities deserve praise for their role in defending America, the patriotism and intellectual integrity of Atheists, Agnostics and other Freethinkers should be respected as well.

Dave Silverman, Communications Director for American Atheists said that Lt. Gen. Blum’s remarks suggest that the military still has a problem when it comes to religious belief.

“We’ve had the scandal at the Air Force Academy where officials were promoting Christian fundamentalism, and we have a problem with military chaplains insulting service men and women who happen to be Atheists,” said Silverman. “Now the top official in the National Guard is singling out Atheists with these narrow and unfair remarks.”

Silverman added that Atheists have always been present in the military, and noted that last year “Foxhole Atheists” from across the nation rallied in Washington, DC on Veterans Day.

“Religious belief, or the lack of it, shouldn’t be a litmus for patriotism, on or off the battlefield.” said Ellen Johnson. “Officials with the National Guard need to issue an apology for these ill-considered remarks made by Gen. Blum.”

American Atheists is a nationwide movement which defends the civil rights of nonbelievers, works for the separation of church and state, and addresses issues of First Amendment public policy.

'Atheists in foxholes' demand respect, recognition and honor

Ron Brynaert
Published: Sunday August 20, 2006

"'There are no atheists in foxholes,' the old saw goes," begins the Beliefwatch column in the latest issue of Newsweek "The line, attributed to a WWII chaplain, has since been uttered countless times by grunts, chaplains and news anchors."

"But an increasingly vocal group of activists and soldiers—atheist soldiers—disagrees," the column continues.

"It's a denial of our contributions," Master Sgt. Kathleen Johnson tells Newsweek. "A lot of people manage to serve without having to call on a higher power."

Master Sgt. Johnson founded the group, Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF) as "a community support network that connects military members from around the world with each other and with local organizations."

"In addition to our community services, we take action to educate and train both the military and civilian community about athiesm in the military and the issues that face us," reads the "About" page at MAAF's Website. "Where necessary, MAAF identifies, examines, and responds to insensitive practices that illegally promote religion over non-religion within the military or unethically discriminate against minority religions or differing beliefs."

MAAF keeps a running list of "Atheists in Foxholes, in Cockpits, on Ships, and Hitting the Beach," who are willing to "come out" on the Internet.

On July 19, some remarks from a speech given by Army Lt. Gen. H Steven Blum to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's 31st annual Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Awards drew the attention of MAAF and other atheist organizations.

"Agnostics, atheists and bigots suddenly lose all that when their life is on the line," Lt. Gen. Blum said. "Something that they lived their whole life believing gets thrown out the door, and they grasp the comrade next to them, and they don't care what color their skin is, and they don't care where they pray."

"They just care,'Can you save them?'" Blum continued. "'Can I trust you? Are you going to cover my back? Are you going to get me out of this?'"

After MAAF complained to National Guard Bureau Affairs, Air National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Michael Milord wrote back in a letter that Blum's remarks were "intended to clearly illustrate the positive spirit of camaraderie, human understanding and inclusion of our fine men and women in the National Guard" and there "was, and is, no intent to offend anyone."

Lt. Col. Milord said that the words MAAF found "objectionable...were taken out of context in a news article," although he didn't mention that it had been published by the American Forces Information Service.

"These fine soldiers and airmen who put their lives on the line to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, know that our people of all philosophies and convictions work together and count on each other, no matter what other issues may sometimes divide people," Milord added.

Another organization, American Atheists, has demanded an apology not only from the National Guard, but also the NAACP.

"Religious belief, or the lack of it, shouldn’t be a litmus for patriotism, on or off the battlefield," Dave Silverman, Communications Director for American Atheists said in a press release.

"Officials with the National Guard need to issue an apology for these ill-considered remarks made by Gen. Blum," Silverman continued.

A year ago, MAAF was instrumental in pushing the Air Force's decision to compose a script for flag-folding ceremonies.

"There is no shortage of scripts available that can be read aloud during a flag folding, but many of those scripts are religious in nature and also ascribe meaning to the individual folds put into the flag," reported Staff Sgt. C. Todd Lopez for Air Force Print News.

"Individuals who hear those scripts end up attributing the contents of the script to the U.S. Air Force," Lopez wrote.

Lt. Col. Samuel Hudspath told Air Force Print News that that was the "primary motive" for composing an official script which would "just speak to the importance of the flag in U.S. Air Force history."

An article at Christianity Today wondered why there was little reaction from the religious right about the change.

"Perhaps surprisingly, the Air Force changes have not become a latest battleground in America's culture wars even though Congress has recently shown interest in protecting the American flag and the religious rights of military personnel," Jason Bailey wrote for Christianity Today.

"Charles Haynes, senior scholar at the First Amendment Center, suggests that conservative religious groups have been silent on the change because they understand that the military cannot take an official position on religion if it is supposed to accommodate all faiths," wrote Bailey.

Historically, many atheists have had a difficult time serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

"An atheist was perceived as tantamount to being a communist," wrote Philip K. Paulson about his mid-sixties Army tour of duty in Vietnam, from the essay "I Was an Atheist in a Foxhole" for The Humanist magazine in 1989.

"I knew that proclaiming to be an atheist while on duty in South Vietnam could likely prejudiced promotions and possibly cause harmful reprisals," Paulson wrote.

Last year, Athiests in Foxholes organized a Veteran's Day rally in Washington D.C. and a march down the National Mall.

The rally wasn't a "referendum on war in general or about a specific military action," but a call for recognition of "those many Atheists, Freethinkers and other nonbelievers who 'stepped up' when they were needed in times of war or other crisis, and often put their lives at risk" and a plea to be "appreciated and honored like all other members of the U.S. military."

Why Doesn't America Believe in Evolution?
By Jeff Hecht
The New Scientist

Sunday 20 August 2006

Human beings, as we know them, developed from earlier species of animals: true or false? This simple question is splitting America apart, with a growing proportion thinking that we did not descend from an ancestral ape. A survey of 32 European countries, the US and Japan has revealed that only Turkey is less willing than the US to accept evolution as fact.

Religious fundamentalism, bitter partisan politics and poor science education have all contributed to this denial of evolution in the US, says Jon Miller of Michigan State University in East Lansing, who conducted the survey with his colleagues. "The US is the only country in which [the teaching of evolution] has been politicised," he says. "Republicans have clearly adopted this as one of their wedge issues. In most of the world, this is a non-issue."

Miller's report makes for grim reading for adherents of evolutionary theory. Even though the average American has more years of education than when Miller began his surveys 20 years ago, the percentage of people in the country who accept the idea of evolution has declined from 45 in 1985 to 40 in 2005 (Science, vol 313, p 765). That's despite a series of widely publicised advances in genetics, including genetic sequencing, which shows strong overlap of the human genome with those of chimpanzees and mice. "We don't seem to be going in the right direction," Miller says.

There is some cause for hope. Team member Eugenie Scott of the National Center for Science Education in Oakland, California, finds solace in the finding that the percentage of adults overtly rejecting evolution has dropped from 48 to 39 in the same time. Meanwhile the fraction of Americans unsure about evolution has soared, from 7 per cent in 1985 to 21 per cent last?year. "That is a group of people that can be reached," says Scott.

The main opposition to evolution comes from fundamentalist Christians, who are much more abundant in the US than in Europe. While Catholics, European Protestants and so-called mainstream US Protestants consider the biblical account of creation as a metaphor, fundamentalists take the Bible literally, leading them to believe that the Earth and humans were created only 6000 years ago.

Ironically, the separation of church and state laid down in the US constitution contributes to the tension. In Catholic schools, both evolution and the strict biblical version of human beginnings can be taught. A court ban on teaching creationism in public schools, however, means pupils can only be taught evolution, which angers fundamentalists, and triggers local battles over evolution.

These battles can take place because the US lacks a national curriculum of the sort common in European countries. However, the Bush administration's No Child Left Behind act is instituting standards for science teaching, and the battles of what they should be has now spread to the state level.

Miller thinks more genetics should be on the syllabus to reinforce the idea of evolution. American adults may be harder to reach: nearly two-thirds don't agree that more than half of human genes are common to chimpanzees. How would these people respond when told that humans and chimps share 99 per cent of their genes?

Brain Gene Shows Dramatic Difference From Chimp to Human
University of California, Davis

Thursday 17 August 2006

One of the fastest-evolving pieces of DNA in the human genome is a gene linked to brain development, according to findings by an international team of researchers published in the Aug. 17 issue of the journal Nature.

In a computer-based search for pieces of DNA that have undergone the most change since the ancestors of humans and chimps diverged, "Human Accelerated Region 1" or HAR1, was a clear standout, said lead author Katie Pollard, assistant professor at the UC Davis Genome Center and the Department of Statistics.

"It's evolving incredibly rapidly," Pollard said. "It's really an extreme case."

As a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of David Haussler at UC Santa Cruz, Pollard first scanned the chimpanzee genome for stretches of DNA that were highly similar between chimpanzees, mice and rats. Then she compared those regions between chimpanzees and humans, looking for the DNA that, presumably, makes a big difference between other animals and ourselves.

HAR1 has only two changes in its 118 letters of DNA code between chimpanzees and chickens. But in the roughly five million years s?nce we shared an ancestor with the chimpanzees, 18 of the 118 letters that make up HAR1 in the human genome have changed.

Experiments led by Sofie Salama at UC Santa Cruz showed that HAR1 is part of two overlapping genes, named HAR1F and HAR1R. Evidence suggests that neither gene produces a protein, but the RNA produced by the HAR1 sequence probably has its own function. Most of the other genes identified by the study also fall outside protein-coding regions, Pollard said.

Structurally, the HAR1 RNA appears to form a stable structure made up of a series of helices. The shapes of human and chimpanzee HAR1 RNA molecules are significantly different, the researchers found.

RNA is usually thought of as an intermediate step in translating DNA into protein. But scientists have begun to realize that some pieces of RNA can have their own direct effects, especially in controlling other genes.

The proteins of humans and chimps are very similar to each other, but are put together in different ways, Pollard said. Differences in how, when and where genes are turned on likely give rise to many of the physical differences between humans and other primates.

Researchers at UC Santa Cruz, the University of Brussels, Belgium and University Claude Bernard in Lyon, France, showed that HAR1F is active during a critical stage in development of the cerebral cortex, a much more complicated structure in humans than in apes and monkeys. The researchers found HAR1F RNA associated with a protein called reelin in the cortex of embryos early in development. The same pattern of expression is found in both humans and rhesus monkeys, but since the human HAR1F has a unique structure, it may act in a slightly different way. Those differences may explain some of the differences between a human and chimp brain.

The chimpanzee genome was published in Nature in 2005, showing that the DNA sequences of humans and chimps are more than 98 percent identical. The current work was funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the U.S. National Institutes of Health and other agencies.

Bites, just as the top pick did. filed under woes.

Life as a Target

Official downplays nuke sites as targets

By Jim Wozniak
Erwin Bureau Chief

ERWIN Â? Should a terrorist-related disaster occur in Tennessee, some people might assume that Nuclear Fuel Services in this part of the state or the Oak Ridge nuclear facilities might be at risk.
But Dwayne Collins, the regional coordinator of the state Office of Homeland Security, told the Erwin Kiwanis Club Tuesday that people should be more concerned about other parts of their community.

Â?I wouldnÂ?t be worried about them,Â? he said in an interview about NFS and Oak Ridge. Â?First of all, they have armed security there. TheyÂ?re well and highly trained individuals, and they work here at these facilities.

Â?I remember when I first started this job, everybody was so concerned about Oak Ridge, Oak Ridge, Oak Ridge. IÂ?m not saying that anything is infallible like I said earlier, but what I am saying is that you have highly trained, well-trained individuals, and thatÂ?s all they do. They train. They train for the worst and theyÂ?re prepared.Â?

Strike-STRIFE - NFS

By Jim Wozniak
Erwin Bureau Chief
jwozniak@johnsoncitypress.com

ERWIN Â? From shouts of Â?scabsÂ? to the swarming of buses and cars, union employees of Nuclear Fuel Services confronted non-striking workers Monday morning with a torrent of emotional words over the companyÂ?s decision to hire replacements.
Union members converged on buses and cars, forcing drivers to move at a snailÂ?s pace until they reached the plant entrance. Some held signs of protest aloft and pressed them near windows as they screamed their displeasure, some with bullhorns, at the people who were going to work.

After the buses were safely in the plant with the help of sheriffÂ?s deputies, a union member expressed his dislike for the contracted security guards who lined the outside. Security forces were mocked as lesser-qualified officers than sheriffÂ?s deputies.

During the four-hour event union members and other backers also lined the corner of Carolina Avenue and the Jackson-Love Highway and stood at the entrance to Riverview Industrial Park, where NFS has a second building. With union supporters inhibiting easy entrance and the sheriffÂ?s department allowing only one direction of travel at a time, traffic was backed up on the Jackson-Love Highway and at a standstill on Interstate 26 near Exit 15.

Â?Go home scabs,Â? Â?Hey, rent-a-scab,Â? and Â?WhatÂ?s your momma think about you being a scab?Â? were among comments directed at bus and car occupants.

Some union members highlighted the strikeÂ?s cause Â? a disagreement they have with management over a proposed six-year contract. One union member said labor wanted a Â?fairÂ? contract to consider, and another asked a company vice president entering the industrial park, Â?Are you going to put us back to work, or are you going to hire some scabs?Â?

Unicoi County Sheriff Kent Harris estimated the crowd to number as many as 500. In addition to members of United Steelworkers, Local 9-677, which has been on strike since May 15, that unionÂ?s president, Roger Birchfield, said representatives of the CSX union were present. Harris said others in the community were in the crowd, including one man who blocked a tractor-trailer from exiting NFS.

Birchfield believed the morning event was a success.

Â?WeÂ?ve had a super good turnout,Â? he said. Â?I do think that hopefully weÂ?ve sent a message to the company that the best way to resolve this is to sit down at the negotiating table and not hire replacement workers.Â?

Company spokesman Tony Treadway said NFS was concerned for the safety of the public and its employees Monday. He said one salaried employee to whom he spoke was frustrated it took two hours to get to the plant Monday.

No arrests were made. Tacks were discovered at an entrance to the NFS training center, but Birchfield said the union was not responsible. Chief Deputy Mike HensleyÂ?s vehicle sustained a flat tire.

Security guard Brian Stevens said in a court document that pro-union supporters hit bus windows with their hands or fists. Birchfield maintained there was no violence, and Harris said he did not see any assaults take place. But he said he had not seen everything.

Company representatives on the buses, in cars and at the plant entrance filmed the events. Later, pictures of what transpired on Carolina Avenue were included in a petition NFS filed asking a judge to find the union in contempt of a 17-year-old court order regulating picket lines at the plant. When Birchfield received a copy of the document in the afternoon, union employees stuck to the NFS entrance and a nearby sidewalk, and buses departed without a hitch.

Treadway said the companyÂ?s proposal to offer an immediate 5 percent pay hike and an average of nearly 4 percent per year over the life of the contract was evidence the company is serious about ending the strike and bringing the union back to work.

This is the first time in the companyÂ?s nearly 50-year history that NFS has hired replacement workers. Treadway said he understands NFS hired 10 of these employees, all of whom showed up for work Monday.

NFS also took out an advertisement Sunday in the Johnson City Press seeking hourly employees as chemical operators. Treadway said it would take about a year before these applicants could start working because of the necessity to receive security clearances, by which time the company would like to have union workers back in the fold. He said the company would not divulge what its future plans were for hiring replacement workers.

Â?I donÂ?t know what their intentions are to this point, with the exception of breaking this union,Â? Birchfield said. Â?And it probably could be from bringing other replacement workers in. The advertisement in the paper obviously is geared toward that intention. WeÂ?re fighting for our lives.Â?

Treadway said the allegation about breaking the union is untrue.

Judge rules injunction still in effect, sets contempt hearing

ERWIN Â? It did not take long for Nuclear Fuel Services to respond to Monday morningÂ?s protest by striking union employees that included slowing the progress of company buses and cars in opposition to managementÂ?s decision to hire replacement workers.

By early afternoon, NFS attorneys Steve Fox and Steven E. Kramer had filed a petition asking Circuit Court Judge Tom Seeley to hold United Steelworkers of America and United Steelworkers International Union, Local 9-677, in contempt of court. They alleged the two labor organizations violated the terms of a permanent injunction signed in 1989 by then-Circuit Court Judge Jack Musick with their actions Monday.

Musick ordered that picketing be limited and restricted to two stationary pickets at the NFS entrance. He also said the union could not interfere with anyone entering or leaving the plant. The union also was barred from coming within 100 feet of buses carrying NFS or Murray Guard employees or harrassing or threatening them.

On Monday, Seeley signed an order saying MusickÂ?s injunction was still in effect, and the judge scheduled an Aug. 30 hearing in Unicoi County Circuit Court to decide whether the union should be held in contempt of courtmembersa ruling might result in jail time for union memners.

Roger Birchfield, president of Local 9-677, said he had not been properly served with the 1989 order and said it was apparently a move by the company in case a strike occurred that year, which did not happen.

Â?Apparently, they claim we violated an injunction we never saw,Â? Birchfield said. Â?WeÂ?ve talked with the sheriff (Kent Harris), and weÂ?re going to abide by the injunction until we go to court.Â?

Harris said he provided a copy to Birchfield of all documents signed Monday by Fox, Stevens and Seeley. Harris said there were still ambiguities in the order that he would need to resolve with Seeley.

The sheriff, who was at NFS to ensure the union was complying with the injunction, said he caught a lot of flak from striking workers and salaried employees for his handling of the union protest Monday. Union workers were mad at him because he allowed the buses to enter the plant, and salaried employees thought he should have arrested everyone involved in the protest. There were also concerns from parents of nearby Love Chapel Elementary School students, he said.

Â?I did the best I could do to keep the peace and safety,Â? Harris said. Â?That was my concern.Â?

Imagine me unleashed in Washington

Project Freedom

As the 9/11 truthers have continually gained credibility, the government has been caught repeatedly lying, covering up, and altering its story. The recently admitted NORAD lies, as reported in the Washington Post, are just the tip of the iceberg. On the other hand, on a regular basis more and more prominent people of all political stripes have come to seriously doubt the official 9/11 fable. The list includes physicists, former fighter pilots, former CIA agents, and even former Reagan officials). At this point, 9/11 truth is exploding in popularity, with poll after poll showing its breakthrough to the mainstream, and media outlets compelled to seriously cover alternative theories of 9/11 government complicity. As Charlie Sheen said, "the worm is turning."

No one is asking anyone to believe every alternative theory to the official theory. To separate truth from fiction, it is best to keep a skeptical eye on every single aspect of 9/11. especially the government's version, Given this government's credibility (or lack thereof), rather than automatically believing the government's 9/11 story, we must closely everything closely. Upon such close inspection, the official 9/11 story unravels into a series of anomalies, indefensible lies, and unlikely coincidences.

Tid bits gathered over a few days, time.

Takes Time to Understand

Anxiety took control today, frustration, foot cramping, waiting room full and Fox news blaring lies about a woman intentions to blow up her baby, and a claustrophobic Muslim woman who had Vaseline, and a note 'about' al qaida for two solid irritating hours. I had to leave my doctors appointment I tried to explain but lunch break time and that took longer than slipping out the door. Over and over I was told and shown on the front page of some UK rag sheet (you might find quoted in this blog too btw) the picture of the young Muslim woman who planned to use her baby as a bomb. Ok, present company included several young women, with children various ages, all young one was five days old. I watched these women attend to their children, not very often you witness the greatest love of all, a mothers love. When you do, you know that it is rare if ever you see a woman who would reject a need of their child or even dream of doing something of this nature. These days I wouldn't even believe them if they said she confessed, as we know how those come about.

Coincidentally happens, but it isn't coincidence that I read this in my mail today ... "FCC Cracks Down on "Fake News".

Coincidental relative stuff does happen, thoughts travel, ::love pours like honey, where hate pours like gravel:: something else in my mail today ....

THE
N-WORD by Nicky Hopkins
for Elisabeth Irwin High School Human Rights
Coffeehouse

I'm white and that
is not a surprise to any of you
But if you looked at my skin could you see I
was a Jew
In Jersey City the kids who don't know me are haten me
They
think cause I'm white, my family supported slavery

I guess they just
assume that I'm a racist fiend
What if they really knew me? Would they think
it was mean?
Would they be shocked to understand they hadn't seen what my
ancestors have seen?
But that's the power of words, cause some you can't
redeem

I understand how
blacks feel when their ancestors were whipped and bashed
Cause I've seen my
mother crying telling me stories about my family being gassed
No one stood up
when a free slave was tied to a tree and his neck was wrung
And the Jews say
"six million is equal to one black being hung"

Cause why should we
argue over who's gone through more pain
We've all looked up for the warm sun
and only swallowed rain
Seen the graveyards of our brothers buried in time
and moss
Whether your family has lived through the Middle Passage or survived
the Holocaust

"I see no changes,
wake up in the morning and ask myself
Is life worth livin', should I blast
myself?"
I understand you Tupac cause I'm white
Just like you I have a
racist war to fight

Now the actions of
past Founding Fathers
Have put stereotypes on my face and now I'm being
bothered
I had to look for a strong hero
And what do you know, he was an
American Negro

Any day I'll parade
around preaching Malcolm X
I'm the white kid with the Black Panthers on his
chest
Raised by an African-American woman from Ocean Ave.
It put pain in
my eyes to see her family never have what I have

But now I stand up
and fight for her
Using my First Amendment to do right for her
Cause I
stopped seeing races a long time ago That was the first thing on my list and
I'll still accomplish mo'

When I read
Eldridge Cleaver"s Soul on Ice my heart was won
I stayed up late
reading Blood in My Eye by George Jackson
I'm mesmerized by any
writings of Malcolm X and I try to read about him daily
Which led me to read
Roots by Alex Haley

Cause this month to
me is celebrating is celebrating patience and accomplishments
It's supposed
to raise your spirits and confidence
To open this racial lock with these
miscellaneous keys
Like Marcos said, "I'd rather die on my feet than live on
my knees"

"I see no changes,
wake up in the morning and ask myself
Is life worth livin', should I blast
myself?"
I understand you Tupac cause I also want to learn
The thought of
combining two such beautiful cultures I yearn

And what those
rabbis said
I can't get out of my head
One innocent victim is too much of
a cost
Cause it's equal to six million Jews in the Holocaust

Stop complaining
and act
If you're wrongly accused then react
We've learned these lessons
too many times in the month of the blacks
No more being bystanders and its
time to take the power back

And I know I have
to respect those who fought for me
I still don't see how my grandmother
crossed the sea
Any day I'd save the life of Martin Luther King Jr. or
Langston Hughes
Cause I know they would have done the same for my relative
Jews

Fuck stereotypes --
we're building a new America
Cause some of us are getting caught up in the
media's hysteria
I'm not wasting any more time in my short life
I'm going
to be a trauma doctor in New York with a beautiful wife

I cry that I can't
fight those who left my family in the gases choken
And I admit I cry when I
hear the N-word spoken
Cause there's no other word more powerful in my mind
than that
And people can't believe that I'm like this cause I'm not
black

Now most of you
probably think I'm a wigger
But who does it hurt when you don't say the
word...
Ironically, the pain that follows the N-word has shaped my
emotions
It pushes me to do good, to never give up and keep hopin'

What kind of a man
would I be if I struck back when I'm called a cracker
Whether it was to hurt
me or to promote laughter
Who in this room believes in bringing back horrible
memories of the past?
Half of you punks and gangsters are hidden behind your
egotistical masks

I say we boycott
the N-word and words just like it
I myself have done it and together we can
all fight it
It's the power of all of us that can make these changes
Cause
almost everyone uses these words even the most influential and famous

But I'm gonna step
up and be a man
Fix the problem with my mouth and not my hand
I'll be the
suicidal delinquent about to pull the trigger
I mean it's just a word, right?
And that N-word is NICKY

Big surprise - who
can believe I've never said it - ever
Living in Jersey City, does that make
me better?
But believe it or not that word is not in my mind
I search for
it everywhere in my vocab and NICKY was all I could find

Somebody stand and
wake up!!
Take off those masks and wipe off the make up
Take in everything
I say cause I'm going of the limits of the meter
And step out a different
person from the black box theater

I aint afraid of
anything I'll do any dare
Yea so I'm white, and I look good with braids in my
hair
Well fuck u statistics because I don't care
And don't anyone ever
judge me by the clothes I wear

New Yorker Fact

Washington’s interests in Israel’s war

by SEYMOUR M. HERSH
Issue of 2006-08-21
Posted 2006-08-14

The former senior intelligence official similarly depicted Rumsfeld as being “delighted that Israel is our stalking horse.”

“It’s a moment of clarification,” President George W. Bush said at the G-8 summit, in St. Petersburg, on July 16th. “It’s now become clear why we don’t have peace in the Middle East.”

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that a ceasefire should be put off until “the conditions are conducive.”

Israeli and the U.S. governments, Israel had devised a plan for attacking Hezbollah—and shared it with Bush Administration officials—well before the July 12th kidnappings. “It’s not that the Israelis had a trap that Hezbollah walked into,” he said, “but there was a strong feeling in the White House that sooner or later the Israelis were going to do it.”

“The Israelis told us it would be a cheap war with many benefits,” a U.S.government consultant with close ties to Israel said. “Why oppose it? We’ll be able to hunt down and bomb missiles, tunnels, and bunkers from the air. It would be a demo for Iran.”

That would make me feel used, and the Bush Haliban wags the world, and a should read ....

Howdy Pilgrims

The pre-school play where my ADHD afflicted son chased everyone with a over cooked turkey, where if turkey and turkey slaughter weren't the lessons these kids and parents would had been re-enforced with, the notion this nation was 'founded' that day "thanksgiving" and by 'those' pilgrims, that day [a small point his teacher let go without correction, his history section on his bookshelf was born that night]. Some seem to learn no more than that, and some inspired with curiosity find meaning to words like 'founding fathers', pilgrim, Religion and government. Those that learn no more, well they have created what we now see called culture wars, they have created the culture wars themselves. Could be a simple mistake on their part, I say mistake because of a simple historical fact. The pilgrims ESCAPED what they want to impose and have imposed on the political landscape of our government, in the first place. Ok, that is where this all started, it pissed me off that this is commonly accepted fact, but it is not and in diluting the importance of why these people were pilgrims in the first place.

The Arabicus

abacus (ab'a kes) n.,pl. -cus-es or -ci' (-sl') [Gr abax] a frame with sliding beads for doing arithmetic. from my webster at hand

A simple wooden framed, wooden or metal dowels placed parallel to each other holding round or square even color coded movable objects to mark a place in calculation. Pre iron age, possibly left over from the last cycle of industrialized society hidden from common history. Thus hidden the example, where industrialized civilization lead with economical laws of demand and supply is more like laws of ants than of a human kind, of which we could had learnt that we still can.

Many places around the world still this is a valuable teaching tool, even one for your computer.

Simple

Who's money is buying bombs?

Who's money is buying bombs?

American Unions for one big investor. Bond fact sheet shows the investments practically speaking is a poor investment on all returns. Besides those that are bombed can add things up, sum things up and who's due.

Nuking the Middle East via DU

Craig Murray and sites that mirror

Sum things up:

Susan G at DailyKos suffers from a terminal case of teh Shrill...
Would you hire a babysitter who hates children and thinks they should be eliminated? Or who
declares for years in your hearing that children are irritants who should be starved to be small, unseen and mute?
Would you hire cops who think laws are stupid and useless and should be abolished?
Would you hire a conductor for your orchestra who believes music itself an abomination?
Then why would you hire - and you did hire them, America; they are your employees, after all, not
your rulers, despite their grandiose pretensions - members of a political party who think government is useless, ineffective, bloated and untrustworthy?
You've hired for your kitchen the chef who spits in your food because he despises preparing meals.
You've hired for your yardwork the gardener who sets out to kill your roses to demonstrate his assertion that they will die in your climate.
You've hired for your office the accountant who's staked his career on proving no accurate books can be kept.
In electing Republicans, America, you put people in charge of institutions they overtly, caustically loathe and proudly proclaim should not exist. Good thinking, USA, and stellar results: Katrina, Iraq, Medicare D, trade and budget deficits, mine disasters and on and on and on and ...
Conservatives have declared officially for decades that they hate public programs and love private business. Why then, do Americans profess shock when these same people run the public credit card up to bunker-busting levels to line the pockets of friendly corporations, leaving taxpayers - current and the as-yet unborn - the bill? It's the dine and ditch mentality writ large, and American citizens are the unfortunate waiters having their lowly pay docked to cover the deadbeat loss - and their future grandchildren's pay docked as well.
We are witnessing an orchestrated, unprecedented transfer of public wealth to private pockets, a national one-party feeding frenzy that's making beggars and beseechers of us all, and yet many
Americans stand around muttering in a daze of semi-apathetic befuddlement about gosh darn how did all this come to be and how sure as shit, uh-huh, those Republicans shore were right, government doesn't do a the little guy a damn bit of good, no sirree bob. Better drown it some more. Cut them taxes, privatize something, anything, pronto!
Kee-rist on a pogo stick.
If you put people in charge of running a project they are ideologically committed to proving a
failure, it will fail.
Seems pretty straightforward to me. But hey, I'm a Democrat. You know, one of those people who think universal quality public education is a massive good to society, that maintaining our highways and levees and bridges and dams is part of what makes this country great, that paying first-responders and nurses what they're worth helps guarantee our public health and safety, that providing for fellow citizens who fall on hard times is not only the ethical thing to do, but the pragmatic one, ensuring that this country does not incubate a permanently inflamed and disgruntled underclass ready to drop a match on a pool of social gasoline.
Here's a thought - just a thought, mind you, beloved America: Perhaps it's time to return to government the party that has an ideological stake in making it ... you know ... succeed. Maybe, just maybe, it's time to raise our sights a wee bit and elect people who think public service is more than an opportunity for the "Biggest! Fire Sale! Ever!" for their friends and loved ones. Perhaps it's time to insist on greater - if not great - expectations from the employees we decide to hire or fire every two years to carry out our will under the constitution.
As one-party Republican rule has clearly shown, when you expect incompetence, corruption and deceit from your government, you get exactly what you vote for. In spades.

Election day in Carter County; write ins, write ins, write ins, and yes lets hope we get to review the appeals judges, and yes it is a conspiracy that chocolate soft serve ice cream or Extreme Moose Tracks in not on the ballot and who cut the water off in our district?

Well our 'founding fathers' must have had mothers that taught them well. There needs to be laws to hold freedom into this realm of reality that allows freedom to be true to it's word and thus this democracy under laws of the republic. [not to be confused with "laws of the 'republican'"] But laws written to guide the chosen representatives of the public as the founding public found freedom and marked it's place in the creating of our United States. Those laws define no king, no dictator, no zar, nor a lord (as in land owner, land lord) thus slaves must be his surf's either should no one individual shall make or break the rules of law that govern the government, or hold them at bay. Our representatives represent more values of bigots and unstudious lawyers to the laws that govern them. Like racist and facist soldiers of the corporational appointed king they grasp your very single most valuable freedom and use it against you, to control you, your freely choosen faith. Or else the reality of our democracy, will look like the realities of the Middle East today.

The safety of the world may very well depend on laws passed, wrote in offices in our nation's state capitals, like laws to limit or eliminate all together profit and public trade of weapons of war and mass destruction, that would be security. Investments into bonds of governments that violate international treaties should be banned, as well as sanctions internationally if diplomacy is exhausted. Humanitarian foreign aid should not have litmus test of moral levels as long as it enables life. Laws to respect human rights in all our representative actions despite how desperate the pre-preemptive may seem, laws against it, laws that allow resolve (related to forgiveness) and stand up only for defense. Democracy is not a game, a bet or gamble when all our lives are at stake when it is, a game.

They have to play like its a game to win, even cheat.

Average wait in line to vote thirty minutes in Kingsport TN, twelve minutes to actually vote, longest ballot in Tennessee history, largest turnout in Tennessee election history. Announced during the time running up to the elections on local new stations as 'the republican primaries' because of the dirt, slinging.

Link to the ESPN Pat Tillman story in three parts. I am asking myself why I find this so interesting, because of all the others if they be a Christian or not. But this may very well be the only illustration to the chain of command and how
dishonest and abusive of the truth those in that chain can be, maybe. Or it might just be I identify with these people, and in this story id's of those who preach, teach what they believe, that (their) god hates. Also to the point of what I am talking about, yes indeed.
