United States of Corporation

IN FIRST HALF OF 2006, WAGES AND SALARIES CAPTURED SMALLEST SHARE OF INCOME ON RECORD:

Share of Income Going to Corporate Profits at Highest Level Since 1950
These findings show that wages and salaries have grown more slowly during the current recovery than in all but one other recovery since the end of World War II even with the recent improvement in the last few years. Corporate profit growth, on the other hand, has been robust and has grown more rapidly in the current recovery than in any other equivalent period since World War II.

Geoffrey Nunberg, Linguist
::
Today I participated in a one hour telephone conference with Geoffrey Nunberg, a linguist who appears regularly on NPR. After the seminar, he provided a reading list which I thought I ought to share for those who are interested. Essentially, Nunberg discussed how the Right has appropriated and controls language and how liberals and the left have forfeited the field to the Right and are now trying to compete by appropriating their language. I will not attempt to do justice to his argument. Read his book or some of his articles.

On a lighter note, Geoffrey Nunberg’s appearance on the Colbert Report:

I listen to my short-wave of the evenings, Havana, CIR and others I pick up scanning, all the same 'ol same 'ol. Global is the corporate reach and control. Radio is good when the skies are cloudy or light by moon, tomorrow I hope it is clear. Crash on the moon, SMART-1. "The time to watch: Saturday, September 2nd at 10:41 p.m. PDT (Sept. 3rd, 0541 UT)." The sun is shifting into a stormy season, a tiny burst of a sun spot is the clue.
[Venezuela's Currency Commission, or CADIVI, announced Thursday that citizens traveling abroad will now be able to exchange bolívars for euros instead of only U.S. dollars. Beginning today, each year travelers will have access to 400 euros in cash or a maximum of 4,000 euros in credit card purchases. Chavez has proposed that oil should be priced in euros as well. Just some things to wonder about.
