“My ethics professor at Harvard Divinity School, Dr. James Luther Adams, told us to watch closely what the Christian right did to homosexuals. He had seen the same tactic in Nazi Germany, where he spent 1935 and 1936 working with the underground anti-Nazi church known as the Confessing Church. The Nazis also used “values” to launch state repression of opponents. Hitler, days after he took power in 1933, imposed a ban on all homosexual organizations. He ordered raids on places where homosexuals gathered, culminating in the ransacking of the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin and the permanent exile of its director, Magnus Hirschfeld. Thousands of volumes from the institute’s library were tossed into a bonfire. The stripping of these Germans’ civil rights was largely cheered by the public and the German churches. But it legitimated tactics, outside the law, that would soon be employed against others. Adams said homosexuals would also be the first “social deviants” singled out and disempowered by the Christian right, but not the last.”

Reading thru the comments to Chris Hedges article “When They Come for the Homosexuals...”, some very employable points are being made. Central to these is ‘I’ll leave you be, just leave me be’, rings true to the freedom of religion principal. It is simple, it is of one element, makes one type of bonding cohesion that builds a peaceful structure even in society. A peaceful society has yet to exist without it, as it reflects a brightness glimmering off respect. When they wrote about it in their bible it should had said ‘you don’t have to love your neighbor, just like them enough to leave them be, let them live’ someone later wrote something near that moral ‘love and let live’.

Nazi reflection is not necessarily a liberal reaction, if you know history you can’t deny the resemblances, not so distant history. If those scare you, your heart and mind’s in the right place no matter your religion. If this we point too, you see yet you remain silent, your just as culpable as those who’s ‘believe’ as in agrees with what the ‘Christian Right’ ‘believes’. Where the issues they choose to whale about, are not a believe it or not issues at all. Directed to those of another view, idea that forms it’s basis on scientific facts, not superstitious beliefs. There is genetic evidence of homosexual behaviors, naturally occurring that have been extensively studied and many scientific materials published contrary to what Dobson, Farewell or any Mohler spew as something ‘believable’. There is physical proof there is more than just two sexes of the human species.

A quarter of the way through Chris’s article I thought of Nazi Germany. It seems to me that everything is already in place here, or soon will be. Wire tap capabilities, ID cards or Driver’s license needed for practically everything. Cell phones can track one’s whereabouts.
Last time it was the Jews, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Poles…… Who will it be this time? Most likely the Arabs, and Muslims in general. The propaganda and stereotyping against them seems reminiscent of the propaganda and stereotyping against Jews years ago, except perhaps the violence factor. Not as much a race but is, immigrants in all have not found our hospitality we possessed seven even eight years ago. As prescribed by our own form of democracy in it’s founding, after all it is not founded on thin air, there is something rock hard there, in that binding of states into this republic that upholds the democracy for all to enjoy.

How did the Godwhacks and Capitalist pigs cloaked as principled republicans while whistling the tune ‘a sucker born every day’ commits high crimes and there is nothing misdemeanor about partisan stacking the courts or the law enforcers? By building the personality of the judiciary, attorney generals of those who follow a certain creed, religion or belief is more horrid than the preaching of General Doom during the post invasion of Iraq, with his illustration of evil. The president is not the commander in chief of civilians. He is not even commander in chief of National Guard troops unless and until they are federalized. The Constitution is clear on this: "The president shall be commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the militia of the several states, when called into the actual service of the United States."

When Abraham Lincoln took actions based on military considerations, he gave himself the proper title, "commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States." That title is rarely — more like never — heard today. It is just "commander in chief," or even "commander in chief of the United States." This reflects the increasing militarization of our politics. The citizenry at large is now thought of as under military discipline. In wartime, it is true, people submit to the national leadership more than in peacetime. The executive branch takes actions in secret, unaccountable to the electorate, to hide its moves from the enemy and protect national secrets. Constitutional shortcuts are taken "for the duration." But those impositions are removed when normal life returns.

But we have not seen normal life in 66 years. The wartime discipline imposed in 1941 has never been lifted, and "the duration" has become the norm. World War II melded into the cold war, with greater secrecy than ever — more classified information, tougher security clearances. And now the cold war has modulated into the war on terrorism.

There has never been an executive branch more fetishistic about secrecy than the Bush-Cheney one. The secrecy has been used to throw a veil over detentions, "renditions," suspension of the Geneva Conventions and of habeas corpus, torture and warrantless wiretaps. We hear again the refrain so common in the other wars — If you knew what we know, you would see how justified all our actions are.

But we can never know what they know. We do not have sufficient clearance.

The glorification of the president as a war leader is registered in numerous and substantial executive aggrandizements; but it is symbolized in other ways that, while small in themselves, dispose the citizenry to accept those aggrandizements. We are reminded, for instance, of the expanded commander in chief status every time a modern president gets off the White House helicopter and returns the salute of marines.

That is an innovation that was begun by Ronald Reagan. Dwight Eisenhower, a real general, knew that the salute is for the uniform, and as president he was not wearing one. An exchange of salutes was out of order. (George Bush came as close as he could to wearing a uniform while president when he landed on the telegenic aircraft carrier in an Air Force flight jacket).

We used to take pride in civilian leadership of the military under the Constitution, a principle that George Washington embraced when he avoided military symbols at Mount Vernon. We are not led — or were not in the past — by caudillos.

Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan's prescient last book, "Secrecy," traced the ever-faster-growing secrecy of our government and said that it strikes at the very essence of democracy — accountability of representatives to the people. How can the people hold their representatives to account if they are denied knowledge of what they are doing? Wartime and war analogies are embraced because these justify the secrecy. The representative is accountable to citizens. Soldiers are accountable to their officer. The dynamics are different, and to blend them is to undermine the basic principles of our Constitution.

History reveals that, in whatever society we are talking about, minorities are frequently the scapegoats for whatever are the prevailing ills of the day.

Depending upon the society, the minority blame-game may be related to skin color, religious affiliation, ethnicity, sexual preferences, etc. Take your pick: Chinese, Irish, Germans, Hungarians, Asians, Catholics, Jews or Africans. All of them at one time or another were regarded as second-class citizens.

African-Americans continued to bear the brunt of the minority label until segregation gasped its last breaths in the 1960s.

Another minority, homosexuals, were for years regarded as the scum of
the Earth, as witnessed by the brutal ways in which they were routinely
harassed. Today, many homosexuals have come "out of the closet" even though they
have not yet been allowed to enter the rest of the house to enjoy their
so-called guaranteed civil liberties.

The most recent bogeyman is the atheist. You know who he is -- the secularist who wants a wall of separation between church and state, the elitist scientist who believes in evolution and not creationism, and the pagan who not only promotes pornography and abortion but also has created a social climate reprehensible to all Christian values.

And if you're a born-again atheist all those labels may apply to you.

Christians in this country believe that unless God is at the center of
national life we will be forever exposed to crime, poverty, warfare and disease.
Although science cannot prove the existence or absence of God, it has been able
to provide some interesting statistics that make one think twice about the
existence and importance of God in a society.

Countries regarded as secular or whose populations have by choice abandoned religion have been compared with those who are considered religious. Studies have demonstrated that when one measures life expectancy, literacy, income and education, nations whose populations are religious do poorly as compared to the more nonreligious ones. In addition, studies of non-African countries reveal that nations with the highest rate of homicide are religious.

If you read the newspapers and other communication outlets, evangelicals and fundamentalists are the hot topic, especially with regard to their welcoming of Armageddon. They are coming out of the woodwork like cockroaches and their pied-pipers are numerous.

This was to be expected since their pied-piper figurehead is President Bush.

You can't swing a dead cat without hitting one of them. Thanks to Bush,
with help from the religious right and its ilk, the United States for the past
six years has been ruled by a faith-based government.

Seizing upon their power in government, the Christian right is attempting to rewrite history as it relates to our Founding Fathers. They claim that America was founded as a Christian nation and that Thomas Jefferson was a decent Christian who really
didn't mean what he said about the separation of church and state. Of course
this attempt at revisionism is totally false.

Jefferson stated in 1802 in front of the Danbury Baptist Association: "The legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and state."

As regards Jefferson's Christianity, he clearly respected Christ as a
philosopher and moral leader but described Christianity as "our particular
superstition." Perhaps Tom DeLay, the evangelical hammer in his day,
inadvertently spoke the truth when Congress rebuffed one of his proposals. He
said, "They treat Christianity like a second-rate superstition."

Perhaps someday the atheist may be able to come out of the closet. Maybe, but if he is a male who is an atheist and a homosexual, don't hold your breath. And if she's a
woman, forget it.

AUSTIN, Texas - Oh dear. I’m sure he didn’t mean it. In Illinois’ Sixth Congressional District, long represented by Henry Hyde, Republican candidate Peter Roskam accused his Democratic opponent, Tammy Duckworth, of planning to “cut and run” on Iraq.

Duckworth is a former Army major and chopper pilot who lost both legs in Iraq after her helicopter got hit by an RPG. “I just could not believe he would say that to me,” said Duckworth, who walks on artificial legs and uses a cane. Every election cycle produces some wincers, but how do you apologize for that one?
